Where It All Began...
I was born on the Navajo Nation reservation. As a child, I was described as playful, adventurous, and curious. I can recall many new and wonderful experiences as I discovered the world around me: the taste of ice cream, the challenges of climbing a tree, playing in the rain. The world was so fresh and new. My dream was to meet every person on this planet and shake their hand.
My father, Rev. Jackson Yazzie (1932-2023) was a member of the Navajo Nation, and the Silent Generation. He was born in a hogan in Toadlena, New Mexico. His nalí is Táchii’nii (Red Running Into the Water People Clan); cheii is Hooghan Łání (Many Hogans Clan). Within his life, he experienced the boarding/residential school system, served in the Korean war, and graduated from seminary school, and went on to assist in translating the New Testament into the Navajo language. His ancestors were medicine people. My grandmother (nálí) was known to be the "giver of names". She held me as a baby and named me “Tranquil Warrior” or “One Who Wars in a Tranquil Way”—this is my Navajo name.
It was said from birth that I would carry on the spiritual aspects of my lineage. My grandfather (chii) had passed years before I was born, but his spirit was seen within me—the spirit of the raven, the spirit of the crow. People who have the spirit of the raven and the crow are individuals who learn within the natural world, who engage in magickal practices, and who fly into the unknown to shed light on situations. Hence, I am Granddaughter Crow. Let's begin our journey together.
